EU budget meeting

European Union foreign ministers are meeting in Brussels for budget talks. The ministers are hoping to resolve some serious disagreements during this meeting, and pave the way for an agreement on the EU’s budget. The British rebate and agricultural subsidies are two of the major issues preventing a break-through.

“The British rebate dates from 1984 when the then Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher insisted it was not fair how little the country received in European farm subsidies. The British government now says it can countenance a cut in the rebate, but only with major reform to the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).
The UK though is isolated.”
