Angela Merkel voted in as Chancellor
Merkel has officially been elected as German chancellor, and will lead Europe’s largest country. On the agenda are big issues such as getting the German economy back on track, which is the biggest economy in Europe. The new coalition consists of Merkel’s party, the CDU/CSU, and the SPD, former-chancellor Schroeder’s party.
“The 51-year-old pastor’s daughter, the first chancellor to have grown up in Germany’s formerly communist east, is the country’s eighth post-World War II leader. The vote in parliament came six months after outgoing Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder announced he was seeking national elections a year early, plunging Germany into a period of political uncertainty. It is taken two months to reach the end result after an inconclusive election forced Germany’s biggest parties into talks on a so-called “grand coalition.”
