Dutch parliament to vote on Afghan mission
After many weeks of discussions between government and parliament, it appears likely that 1400 Dutch troops will be deployed to Southern Afghanistan. Dutch labour party PVDA has dropped most of it’s objections against the mission. The US, NATO, and the UN have put the Netherlands under intense pressure to send troops to the dangerous region.
“MPs from the junior coalition party, D66, will vote against the mission to southern Afghanistan. Support from Labour would mean a broad majority in favour. Still, some government and opposition MPs are seeking extra assurances that Dutch troops will work independently from the American operation, Enduring Freedom.
Polls show that Dutch public opinion is almost equally divided on the issue. ”
