Belarus demonstrations continue
Alexander Milinkevich, the leader of the Belarussian opposition, urged his supporters to keep up demonstrations. The demonstrations erupted after widespread election fraud favoring President Alexander Lukashenko. The European Union and the United States have both condemned the poll. Neighbouring Russia has accepted the election results as accurate and fair. Belarus is seen as the last dictatorship of Europe.
“Several hundred protesters were braving freezing temperatures for the third day to camp out on a central Minsk square. Police harassed people entering the square, but made no immediate move to crack down on the unprecedented protest in the country. Saturday is the anniversary of the declaration of independence of the first, short-lived Belarussian republic in 1918. The March 25 anniversary has been a traditional day for protests by opponents of Lukashenko.
“We will stay here until the 25th, and on the 25th we will gather here to fight for our future,” Milinkevich told the crowd. “Come here every day to speak of freedom,” he said, speaking in the light of television cameras after the lighting on the square was shut off. ”
