The French government is under intense pressure to repeal a law that makes it easier for companies to fire young employees. The measure is meant to put an end to many years of high youth unemployment, which is estimated to be 22.2 percent, more than twice the French average of 9.6 percent.

“France, caught in a standoff between the government and unions on a new work law, is bracing for a disruption of services on March 28, after transport and power company workers said they’ll join the walkout.

Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin hardened his stance last night, repeating that he won’t revoke the law. Known by its French acronym CPE, the law lets companies fire workers under 26 within the first two years of employment with little notice or severance. Unions have made the law’s revocation a condition to start talks with the government. ”
