EU to prevent high roaming costs
Brussels is working on lowering roaming costs, the charges caused when using mobile phones while in another country, telecom companies are opposed to the plan. EU telecoms commissioner Viviane Reding will be introducing legislation to tackle the issue. She has the support of EU leaders.
“The conclusions of the meeting note the “importance for competitiveness of reducing roaming charges and the commission was asked to bring the issue back to the ministers before the end of 2006. On Tuesday (28 March), Ms Reding is to publish concrete plans for tackling the issue. Europe’s mobile operators are opposed to regulations but have disagreed in their approach to Brussels’ clampdown. According to media reports, mobile operators in southern Europe in particular are not happy about scrapping profitable roaming fees paid by tourists.”
