1000 Illegal CIA Flights

Over a 1000 flights took place in Europe by the US intelligence agency CIA according to a report by the European parliament. And EU governments knew about the flights. When this subject first appeared in the media EU governments either denied they had knowledge of the flights or kept quiet.

Belgian killing : 80,000 protest

Around 80,000 people gathered in the capital of Belgium on Sunday to protest the cowardly killing of a teenager. The victim was stabbed to death after refusing to give his MP3 player to two robbers. Belgian police have so far not been able to track down the killers. Prime Minister Verhofstadt promised Belgium would do more against youth crime.

Germany to breach EU deficit rules

Welfare costs are increasing in Germany, and could cause it to breach EU deficit rules again. Chancellor Merkel’s reform plans may be in jeopardy, but it does justify a planned VAT hike to make up for the increased costs. Unemployment benefit figures, and economic growth will determine the final picture for Germany.

Prodi : Core group of EU states

Romano Prodi has unveiled plans of a core group of EU states that work towards even closer integration. The group would consist of Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Belgium and Luxembourg. The UK and the Netherlands would not be invited. Both France and the Netherlands rejected the planned EU constitution.

Russia to send aid to Palestinians

The US stopped aid to the Palestinian authority after a Hamas victory in recent elections, so did the EU, which accounts for most of Palestinian financial aid. The Italian Election

Much confusion still remains as Italy is recovering from months of election campaigning by current Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and his center-left challenger Romano Prodi. Prodi was declared the winner of both houses of parliament, but the margin was tiny. Berlusconi demands the checking of thousands of ballots.

Bulgaria and Romania to join EU in 2007

Two candidate countries, Bulgaria and Romania, are on track to join the European Union in 2007 despite some slow reforms. EU leaders can delay accession but have indicated that they wish to start ratification procedures as soon as possible. EU state number 26 and 27 are eager to join.
