Southeastern Europe Eager To Join EU
Countries in Southeastern Europe are eager to join the European Union despite recent rocky relations. EU talks with one of those countries, Serbia-Montenegro, have been terminated. Serbia-Montenegro has so far failed to hand over war crime suspect Mladic to the UN Tribunal in The Hague, The Netherlands. Montenegro has indicated it does not want to be the victim of Serbia’s failure and will continue it’s plans to become an independent state, as well as continue EU membership talks.
Countries of southeastern Europe on Thursday affirmed their commitment to join the European Union, despite growing hostility in parts of the bloc and the breaking off of EU talks with Serbia-Montenegro.
“All countries must conform to the demands of the EU, but the European prospect must remain alive for all,” Greek Prime Minister Costas Karamanlis told a news conference at the summit of the South-East European Cooperation Process (SEECP).The SEECP groups 10 southeastern European countries, including Greece, which currently holds the presidency of the group and is its only EU member. Karamanlis reported “an excellent level of cooperation” between the countries of the SEECP, whose other members are Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia-Montenegro and Turkey. It also announced on Wednesday that it would receive a tenth member, Moldova.
