Europe’s Obesity Problem
You thought only Americans have an obesity problem? No, Europeans are catching up quickly. The EU is concerned, and health commissioner Markos Kyprianou wants to take action as soon as possible. After a EU-US conference on the subject, Kyprianou said especially children in Europe show worrying trends in obesity. He notes that over 400,000 children in the European Union become obese every year. The EU-US conference is aimed at sharing experience in the fight against bad eating habits and education.
The main aim of the conference is for the EU and the US to share their experiences and learn from each other on diet, physical and health issues.
EU studies show that in Europe today, six out of the seven most important risk factors for premature death are related to how a person eats, drinks and moves.
These are blood pressure, cholesterol, body mass index, inadequate fruit and vegetable intake, physical inactivity, excessive alcohol consumption and certain kinds of cancer.
