EU to ban trade in cat and dog fur

European News

The European Commission is planning to introduce legislation that bans the importing of fur of cats and dogs. The EU is currently facing an illegal import of such material from China. European citizens approve of tougher laws concerning fur trading. The public does not accept the farming of cats and dogs for fur. The ban promises to make the use of dog and cat fur in any kind of consumer product illegal. Consumers today can still inadvertently buy products that contain such fur. The European parliament and the EU member states have to approve the proposal before it becomes EU law.

The European Union moved Monday to ban the trade in dog and cat fur amid growing evidence that imports are illegally making their way onto European markets, notably from China.

The EU’s executive arm, the European Commission, said that it had drawn up a proposal to ban imports, exports and sales of the fur which would harmonise legislation already introduced by some of the 26 member countries.

The move has come in response to widespread public criticism of the trade.

“The message that we have received from EU consumers has been loud and clear,” said Health and Consumer Protection Commissioner Markos Kyprianou.
